Getting into ambient music
there's a lot of negative attitudes about ambient. People say:
- 'Ambient' has become a dumping ground for any music that has no vocals and is slow and without beat
- The ambient genre has expanded beyond use, due to artists describing everything under the sun as also ambient for SEO.
- When people want to make an album that they think will seem cultured to friends, but want to be able to kick it out in a week, they make a singer-songwriter album or an ambient album, and for this and other reasons the ambient album is full of half-baked works.
And all of this may be true, it is a very crowded genre, but it is still possible to find artists you like in that crowd.
A good approach is to listen to a few tracks until you find one you like, then look at the poster's history and see what other ambient artists they liked.
Linking Rules
Links are permitted to any page where you can freely play ambient music, and to any (legally downloadable) ambient music file or page which links to the same.
Here are some examples of sites that are allowed. Please prefer sources earlier in this list (though this will not be enforced):
- archive.org
- artist or record label social media or webpage (incl. soundcloud, bandcamp).
- direct file download (so long as it is obvious from the URL, a comment you make in the post, or otherwise that it is the artist's intent to distribute it free)
- youtube/vimeo/other third party host.
- music blog where it is immediately obvious how to play the track.
Links are not permitted to:
- sites full of annoying adware
- sites that require you to 'sign up' or do some other thing to play the track/album/playlist.
