I get how this might've been a popular thing when sea travel was more popular and more dangerous, but I'm not aware of any recent instances where a large boat sank and the "women and children" first mentality cost men their lives. It's like an image macro from the Victorian/Edwardian eras.

This used to grind my gears when I was a kid. I used to take the ferry often and even at five years old I didn't get this.

Well duh, gender is only an issue when it does not work in someones favor. Like, its ok for a woman to punch a dude, but if he puts his paws on her he is a horrible person.
