Honestly I think this whole case is bullshit and statues of men like him shouldn't be removed since we can't really judge the past by our present values but it's not really about this.

"but it's a symbol of the oppression of the white man!! he was rich, and white, and had a penis, and he's from a 'first world' country, therefore he must be a privileged horrible racist who hates everyone else."

everything you said is true but the reason people are fighting against this is because this guy was one of the top figures in British colonialism. I still think there is absolutely no reason to remove his statue but it's not just about muh white privilege, the guy was very active in colonialism which in my opinion quite understandably makes some people pissed off.

Getting rid of colonialism was a silly move on the West's part.

It could have been handled better, certainly, but the core idea was solid.

You are right, they certainly did that. However not mentioning the genocides, slavery and torture is historical revisionism or complete ignorance. Africa was a primitive shithole, but that does not justify what Europeans did there.

What even is "colonialism"?

Any time a white guy travels? Sets up a well? Starts a company?

When the poor are told to head into a region their people don't belong to and act in a supremacist manner, Rhodesia and Deutschistan.

Yes I am aware of this, I don't think his statue should be removed, he was still a very important figure in British history and he deserves recognition for that I guess.
