I know you're copying the headline so please be aware that I am not yelling at you, @Alleydin.. but I gotta say:
THEY'RE NOT DRONES! AHH
As an RC hobbyist they've been called 'drones' only within the past couple years as a Buzzfeed like title by the media and uninformed. As the hobby grew and it became much easier to enter it due to pre-made 'ready to fly' gadgets an influx of people with more money than sense have been doing stupid, stupid things with them which have been giving them such a bad name. It's almost entirely DJI Phantom owners, those who buy a $1,000+ ready to fly quadcopter and without reading instructions or understanding the learning curve they take them up as high as they can, fly them near airports, fly them into traffic, fly them into buildings in NYC and make up literally a good percentage (80%+) of negative media coverage.
Ranting aside, these RC multirotors are harmless. The ones that do have cameras have such a wideangle lense on it for view that you'd have to be 10 feet away from you to get a good enough image for 'spying'. They're loud, noisy and have shitty battery lives and aren't ideal for such things even though the public are afraid that someone, somewhere, has any interest at all in what they're doing. (Newsflash, no one cares). If I wanted to spy on someone, a ladder, a DSLR camera with a telephoto lense or just hiding in a bush and jotting down notes are much more practical options.
What's even more funny about all of this 'drone' nonsense is that when an RC AIRPLANE, which actually does resemble a military drone in the sense that they're fixed wing aircrafts... the media calls them... RC airplanes.
Somehow quadcopters and multi-rotors get the bad label.
I've got 3 of them personally, one cheap one I bought to learn and the two others I built myself. I'm sick of idiots doing stupid things with them to get bad media coverage and I'm sick of bad media calling them 'drones'. It's an uphill battle, very much so, hell... even some shops/parts companies are using the term 'drone' to advertise like it's the next big thing and buzzword. Just frustrating, is all.
In a recent survey people were asked if they felt they had the right to shoot down a 'drone' over their property. I don't have the exact figure but they overwhelmingly said 'yes'. Had the question been, "Would you shoot down Timmy, the teenage kid who lives nextdoor's RC quadcopter toy"... the answer would be vastly different.

Also, join the AMA and fly responsible, not over people or near property that could be damaged if/when you crash.
