To be entirely fair, it would be fairly naive of China (or the US for that matter) to stuff billions of Dollars into infrastructure projects within other countries, only to see them gone in an instant because they failed to make the local leadership dependent on the sponsor.

It's all about soft power.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly. It would also be somewhat naive to believe that a government would do anything solely for altruistic purposes.

With that said, there was an interesting article specifically about Djibouti yesterday on zerohedge, basically about the debt situation, and if you look a few months back, you can also find articles about the laser issues being pointed at american aircraft.

Then, you also take into consideration (solely as an example) the over production of steel in the market from China, I think you may come to a similar conclusion that this is much more than soft power.
