I know that sound very well, and it isn't the sky, it's the bed of ice that they are either camping on or very close to. Here's a link for everyone not familiar with the outdoors (much like the author, obviously).

It could also be the power lines themselves for whatever reason. The Star Wars blaster noise was actually recorded in a very similar manner, tapping on a tensioned steel cable of some sort.
