Commentary: Although it would be easy to explain Merkel's decreasing popularity based on the refugee crisis and her "Welcome Politics" alone, it should be kept in mind that many Germans also are simply becoming tired of "Mutti" (or 'Mommy' as some sarcastically refer to Merkel) after three terms in office. In particular, Merkel's critics argue that she very rarely takes the initiative, preferring to wait until all potential effects of a political actions become apparent, and she likewise has a tendency to simply wait out politicial incidents based on her or her party, the Center-Right Christian Democrats.

Another thing to reconsider is that, as banal as it may sound, half of Germany opposing a fourth term of Merkel in office also means that roughly the other half of the Germans would welcome it, despite of the heavy flak the chancellor has taken in the recent months.

That's not how polling works, less than half welcome it, the rest don't know or care. Actually less than half welcome it anyway since it's 48%, and there's varying degrees in those 48%.
