The Martyrs. French horror movie nights (not as cool as it sounds because I always shit my pants driving home) with a few mates brought me to this. It's high energy/gore, but makes you adequately unfomfortable with little to no jump scares, perhaps existential horror fits the description.

Good ol' Guillermo Del Torro. I've seen this one! Quien su espiros, the child ghost, right? I loved the setting and atmosphere. The sequel, Pan's Labyrinth, is probably better known.

Yeah, you can definitely see hints of his now much more fantasy based stuff in Backbone. Definitely a slow burn horror, but I prefer Pan's.
