That sucker looks like it is hauling ass on that turn. I wonder how fast it is going?

30 Knots maybe? I was impressed.

Not going to evade an anti-ship missile.

It's like the military really doesn't understand how to effectively combat future warfare tactics. Russia has autonomous nuclear submarine torpedos that they could move near a fleet and effectively destroy it in one go. China has cheap supersonic low-flying anti-ship missiles that could easily overwhelm the counter-measures of these ships.

And here they are practicing turning the ship very slowly, presumably to better avoid hitting cargo ships in the South China Sea.

Russia isn't the only threat though, for example would it evade a boat rigged with explosives and set in their direction? I think it would. Or another ship attempting to ram them etc.

Also if we look at history and the USS liberty then their biggest threat is Israel, not Russia.

Probably used more against torpedos. That or maybe they do a hard turn after launching chaff.

Well look at Castle Bravo. Anti-ship nukes have been around since the Cuban missile crisis but never used, and the Argentines had anti-ship missiles in the Falklands. Had the British fleet not sent interceptors against the Argie sorties, causing those yellow pilots to lose their nerve, they probably would have sunk a lot of ships. Old school navies have been out classed for a long time we have just not had a big naval war for a long time.

There is a reason no one builds battleships and cruisers any more. New ships all seem to be missile boats. Aircraft carriers are only for force projection and are easy targets. Always have been. I am no navy man but consider that the army still does formation drills. We don't do war in formation anymore.

Make one wonder how a freighter managed to run over that ship.

I’m glad they had the sailors on the deck. I’m sure it’s the sea that does it, but I always think the ships look smaller than they actually are. The sailors really showed the ships size for me.

Looks a bit like an evasive counter steer on a motorbike, where you steer out first, allowing you to take a sharper steer inwards.

Compare the turn to the wake. When you look at that scale it seems like it turned completely around in very little space.
