I can't recall where I saw this initially, but it wasn't on Voat. It was a few months ago.
There has to be an explanation, right, and I'm just too blind and stupid to see it?

Same thing happens on duck duck go. So it's likely not the search engines doing it but a collection of websites with scripts to react.

Well, I think a logical explanation might be that google is pulling from every set of data from every global location since the beginning.
With the over saturation of media coverage, there is a good chance that almost every number has been used once somewhere.
Also, I did plug in a bunch of random numbers and found that "1220 cases" does not bring up a Kung Flu count anywhere on the front page...yet.
edit: There is a Corona count on the second page, though.
