There already is that option, go to you settings page and look for:

Open links in new tab

Check the box.

To be fair, though, that only makes it effect external links. If you click to go to a comment section it still opens in the same tab.

You can also click links with the middle mouse button to open them in a new tab.

Agreed, voat is still lacking on the mobile experience.

Edit: That being said, on most mobile devices that support tabs your should be able to hold down on a link for a second or two and have an menu option appear to open in a new tab.

It's called middle click your fucking mouse on 95% of modern browsers.

100% of modern browsers, but it also depends on your mouse settings (middle click may be bound to scroll or some other function instead of sending mouse3), and the availability of a mouse at all.

While over a link middle click opens it in a new window, when not on a link it scrolls. I've never seen a mouse not act this way in at least a decade.
