Trade deals are about access to markets. They aren't about who has the most money.

And the UK market is fairly small, at US' scale, so you'll have to have some incentives for them to even bother.

That's about why the EU was formed originally : to create a market big enough to negociate from a position of strength.

The EU was originally formed (as the ECSC) to create a single market for coal and steel. It had nothing to do with striking trade deals with nations outside Europe.
