Still wrapping my head around this system, feels very alien to me.

Hey all

Does anyone feel like they can't be who they really are?

For example, my grandparents are really Christian, so I feel uncomfortable talking about my personal spirituality ("Oh no, you have a temple in your bedroom and worship Egyptian Gods?" I wouldn't do that to them)

I feel like i have a lot of depth to myself that I can't let people know about. However, I'm an artist, and the art that is meaningful to me ends up containing all of the elements of my complex sexual life, spiritual life, and social life all intertwined in one. I'm afraid that there is going to be a point where once my art becomes successful, and I am able to convey what I want, there will be a falling out once people realize who I really am.

It's scary.

There's just a ton of baseless anxiety and fear that pervades this society, so I understand the feeling of being unable to express your true self. I've had dysthymia (low grade depression) my whole life. I have a personal theory that more creative people are more susceptible to feeling it, with "dumber" people being simply unable to make the connections to feel the social pressures. The sheep of society, so to speak.

I recently started going on a bit of an "honesty" crusade. I literally can't stand how so many people say one thing and mean a direct opposite, so I started simply saying exactly what I mean in literal terms. I started sharing some of more "crazier," less politically correct thoughts to people around me. Not always the best call for social situations, but I've found I definitely sleep better at night.

That's interesting, I also have had dysthymia since I was really young. It seems to run in my family.

I don't know if I really want to share some of the things about my private life with others, at the same time. There's a lot about me that would just end up disturbing other people or pushing people away that I would desire to make connections with. I had to repeatedly tell my ex that talking about Hitler's goals in public is not a good way to make friends. She never got that one.
