Rides arranged through Uber, which recently said its drivers provide “tens of thousands” of smartphone-coordinated rides to Boston residents on a daily basis, can end up being less expensive than a taxi. But “surges” often take place around commuting hours when demand is high and the supply of drivers is limited, multiplying the base fare by a fixed amount. They also occur on busy nights, such as New Year’s Eve and Halloween.>
So in a busy city it could be more expensive but if it takes 5 minutes for Uber to show up and 20 minutes for Yellow Cab then many people will pay a little extra for faster service.
What the city and cabbies should take away from all this is their customers are unhappy and they need to change how they run their businesses.

Uber base their prices on current demand for drivers.
