It really is true. Used to be a cheap staple but every time I go grocery shopping the price keeps going up. It has come to the point that I plan my weekly meal decisions based on the prices of meat. Been finding chicken is quite reasonable. But god I truly am starting to get a craving for some beef. So many of my old school family meals especially call for ground beef.
I went to get GB out of the freezer to thaw for dinner tonight and noticed the package was $9 (I'm in Canada). What happened to it being $4? Families seriously survive on GB since Chicken is even more expensive these days.
Canadian here also and I truly understand. $8-9 for a pound and a kilo you would be lucky to find for $15. Just 2 years ago I was finding it at $10-11 for a kilo. They always claim inflation is at 4-5% but in beef alone it is a good 20-30%. Hell I don't even bother buying bacon anymore at $5-6 for 375g if you want a decent enough cut. Meat is getting crazy expensive up here in Leafland.

My parents grew up in the Great Depression and taught me a trick,. Sometimes I replace the meat with Ritz Crackers, then I leave it in front of the front door of my neighbours, ring the door bell and then run like hell to the back of their house and steal their dinner from their kitchen. It's how I discovered Thai food!
lamb chops are amazing, we've replaced steak dinners w/lamb. Not cheap but not as expensive as beef. Good protein is always pricey, fish is really expensive now too. Mussel soup was a super cheap and yummy meal but the quality of mussels is declining where I live (inland).
Beef is supposed to be expensive. Cattle are one of the least efficient ways to turn plants into meat. You want cost effective animal protein, buy chicken or milk or crickets.

I use venison that my fiancee shot as long as I think the dish will still taste okay!
