he would NEVER consider buying a vehicle above $1500 at most, and try to talk them down to $1000. he had 60k in the bank that he never touched, even when his car broke down going back to his parents for the holidays. i wound up driving him around for holiday trips after that first year just so i would not have to deal with his bullshit about cars. Looking back, i honestly have no idea wtf was wrong with him.

That's pretty ridiculous. I can see some appeal in the "disposable vehicle" approach but not when you're inconveniencing yourself and others in the process. Especially not when there's decent machines just above that price range.

exactly, ~$5000 has a lot of options, one of which i was driving at the time, and a decent basic car between $20,000 and $30,000. this thing was the example that i should have dumped him that first year. Aside from a dozen other things that piled up over those years, he had the basics: Job security, money to live comfortably with room for children, owned his house, did not drink or smoke, came from a respectable family. His quirks were just wrong and weird.
