Still a shotgun and if the barrel is shorter than 18" or the overall length is less than 26", it's an NFA item. The instant a stock is put on a receiver, it's a long gun forever.
However, if it was manufactured and sold without a stock (pistol gripped), it can be braced. Still has to be 26" OAL, though, and it isn't a "shotgun" federally. State laws vary.

What if you take the stock off, cut the barrel, put on a brace

So it's not legal to get a Lynx 12 and cut it down to the gas block and put a brace on it?
