Remember not to push.
Remember not to use shaving gel. Shaving gel (and canned creams) have chemicals to make your skin softer so that cartridge blades can scrape the skin. You don't need or want this with your safety razor. Once you stop poisoning your skin, your blade will work better. You don't have to buy fancy soaps to make a lather, a cheap glycerine from any shop will do for now, as well as a cheap brush.
Do several passes. It will take a lot longer at first, but once you get your technique down, and start trusting yourself to not cut yourself, you will be able to do this very quickly. First pass goes downward. Lather back up and do a pass going across the grain. Finally lather back up and do a pass going upward. This will result in the closest shave of your life, and depending on the growth rate of your hair might make it so you don't have to shave the next day.
Remember not to push.
Edit: Corrected a word.

So you're saying I shouldn't push it real good?
