“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” --Robert Heinlein

I thought of this quote when I saw the topic here. RAH wrote a series of books loaded with nuggets of wisdom in this vein aimed at juvenile males, I'm pretty sure I read them all.

I remember reading this when I was about 14 in the mid 1980s. It seemed like quite a daunting list back then. I think I have a pretty good handle on a lot of them now. I don't think I've ever planned an invasion or butchered a hog before, and I'm not too big on sonnets. And I haven't died yet, so I have no experience in that department. But I have at least taken a crack at everything else on the list. Comforting the dying is probably one of the hardest. Unfortunately as you get older, you get to do it more and more.

This is a good subverse. I have a lot of life experiences, but I also have a lot of holes in my experiences. I've done a clutch on a car, I can do disk brakes, I built a lot of stuff over the years including a solar powered off grid cabin. But I didn't have a dad around and I don't know much about that to my new 10 year old stepson. Maybe we can teach each other how to do the things we're missing.

Deliver a baby should be added to this list.

Some prefer to master a craft though and I think it has it's place. We don't live long enough to learn how to do everything there is to do especially when you need to spend much time either sleeping or finding ways to earn money.

Can you do the majority of those things? If you can come to /v/thegentleman and preach. If you can't come and learn.

Nice... just what I want when I come to Voat is to be preached at. No thanks.

A young (late twenties) friend of my sons has recently red-pilled, and has asked for some time from me to discuss how to proceed. I am looking forward to the discussions, and any pointers would be appreciated.

A man should know how to fish, hunt, and cook. Want to really impress a lady? Know hot to do laundry, fold and store said laundry. A man should know that when a lady enters a room he should stand and greet, offer a chair, be able to hold polite conversations. There are so many more to add but, I’ll let someone else get in here. Looking forward to hearing from others too.
