Now, in my opinion, he came accross too strong in the first one. He'd never really been in that setting before and came out at 110%. Meanwhile Hillary was deliberately acting all calm and collected to make Trump seem even more over the top.

I remembered it differently but I literally just watched it again and I agree with your assessment, although I do think he gained enough experience from having debated his GOP opponents so he wasn't completely new to the concept of debating although a 1 vs 1 debate might be considered substantially different.
I can see that this was her angle but to me she wasn't any different than her usual self, just her faked and emotionless self.
I do still think, in my opinion, that Trump still won this one although he could have held back a bit more as you mentioned in order to persuade more voters.
