The idea that America is some great land of free speech where we all share principles and dialogue with one another is pure mythology. America has a long history of rejecting 'Merikan valoos' when push came to shove. Loyalists were chased out of the colonies and their press buildings were burned to the ground. Dissidents during the Civil War were rounded up and thrown into jail and similar anti-dissident behavior reared its head again during WW1 with Socialists being imprisoned. As one Monarchist intellectual I know of calls it, "The illusion of inclusion. As long as people think they're apart of the system in some small, small, small way then they won't riot and participate in seditious acts.

the founding fathers created america for free white people of good character as a country of ideals. No one is or at least no one should be saying America is prefect but we want it to be perfect, we want to strive for the freedoms and self-evident rights enshrined in the constitution. The constitution doesn't describe the kind of country we are or always have been it describes the kind of country we want to strive for

I guess it depends on how you measure success.
