Who knows how much time had passed. My view was covered by the wormhead and even if it wasn't, I doubt I might see a clock on the dank walls. The creature that carried me was slowing. Finally it stopped. It unraveled and the dim light met my eyes again. I felt a tugging at my left shoulder and I think one of those little fingers on the worm was pushing into me. It felt bruised - deep.
I slid off the thing and it seemed gaunt. Hardly the fat creature that I encountered....days ago? Had it been days? Or was it just a power nap for me? The thing now looking like the skeleton of some sci-fi brontosaurus walked ahead of me. It entered what appeared to be a huge asshole. I laughed at the thought, but still - a sphincter of some kind. As my brain fog cleared, I saw where I was. These walls were no longer stone, but fleshy. The smell was that of an unshowered man. Ahead of me was something right out of a H.R. Giger piece. A wall made of faces. Some human. Some animal, but certainly no animal I have ever seen. Their eyes, a palette of all the colors of the rainbow, shifted around. Those in the center remained fixed on me whilst the larger ones on the walls around me darted like an over-caffeinated mad man.
"Welcome, Middle_Path" the voice, or rather, voices spoke. "We sent for you the second we heard you were in the Crypt".
"Yes" I said as if I knew what 'the crypt' was. "and, where did your friend go? Into the poop-chute?"
"The material will be re-absorbed. It's called a 'zero' by us. We create it and give it just enough energy to perform its task, when the task is done the biomass gets eaten again. No waste." The voices said, smiling with the finishing sentence.
"So assuming I know where I am, what you are, and how I got here..." I certainly didn't. "What did you drag me down here for?"
"To be our champion!" The voices exclaimed, the deeper voices took precedent this time. "We have a task for you, but we won't bore you with the details quite yet. Get ready for your first challenge."
Before I had a second to prepare my next thought, another sphincter opened. From it came something that looked like what would happen if you brought a kid's poorly drawn cartoon to life. It seemed human, but also not. It's proportions were off, there was definitely some animal mixed in, and a dash of crazy about it. The beast charged after me. I was really missing those goblins right about now. I know I won't be able to take it on unarmed and my left shoulder was now killing me with pain.
Great, this is how I die - a poorly written session of dungeons and dragons. Fucking dungeon master throwing an over-leveled beast at me. I ran and as I glanced behind me I saw the creature looked dazed. It clearly wasn't of sound mind. It sniffed the air and its beady eyes fell on me again. It pursued. It occurred to me that this creature may be blind, then a second thought arose - that offers me absolutely no advantage. At this point I fully realized how useless sight really was. This critter couldn't appreciate the works of Van Gogh, but it sure as shit could find me. I lunged to the right, falling to the floor and the beast's jutted maw began tearing at the eyeball and nose that hung on the wall. I expected the committee that greeted me to cry out it pain, but they did not. They expected this.
I stood up and looked around while my opponent was occupied. No weapons, no escape, no more time left for me. "I'm going to die he-" The pain in my shoulder intensified and burned. A mixture of growing pains, burning, and a light massage were all sensations raging. I began to feel my left arm covered in something, like a wet blanket wrapped around it. The beast ran after me again and was then met with a scream. But it didn't come from me, though it would be appropriate. The scream came from the beast. Then a thud. I look down and the thing had a hole in its skull. Coming out of that hole was a huge glistening tentacle that was attached to...me?
"Behold! Our champion." the voices cried, a few hands from the walls clapped. "Welcome to the Humonculi, now for challenge two."
