'The Crypt is whatever you want it to be'

The Crypt, where to begin. You are now within the realm of the Crypt, you are its prisoner, and there is no escape. There are many ways in, but only one way out, and the Orb holds it secret. This is your story to tell, what you discover, where you go, and who you meet, is entirely up to you. Perhaps one day, you may even find a way out, for in the dark, anything is possible.

There are many ways into The Crypt, but only someone within The Crypt may summon you. Every player that awakens within The Crypt, will find a dark orb hanging around their neck. The Orb allows you to summon one new player to the game every cycle, and it cannot be removed. What other secrets it posses, are up to you to discover.

There are three cycles to The Crypt. True darkness is the most frustrating of the phases. What lurks in the darkness, what horrors does it hold? What powers it might unleash, is yet to be written. The darkness is no ones ally. It is easy to kill in the darkness, but can you find your prey. Can you tell friend from foe?

Twilight is the second phase, everything is more substantial. Things that can be done in the dark, cannot be done in the Twilight. It's easier to see where you're going, and easier to find things. This is the best time for exploring and meeting with others, a time to rest from the carnage of the darkness.

The third phase is the Forge. When the Forge fires up, the Crypt is filled with light. Creatures of the dark are banished, and the Orbs are filled with energy. New things can be easily crafted, wondrous things discovered. The Forge marks the end of a cycle.

The realm of the Crypt has yet to be discovered, yet to be mapped. Entire civilisations have risen and fallen within The Crypt, never seeing the light of day. Can you escape, or will you be stuck in the labyrinth forever. Not even death can set you free, only the key will open the door, and only the orb can tell the secret.

Rules

  1. The Crypt is your story to tell, what happens is up to you, just tell a good story and anything goes.
  2. Try to make it realistic or justified, feel free to vote aye or nay if you feel a story is particularly relevant or opposed to the general feel of the game. Community decides.
  3. The Orbs say is final, and only it can decide if you leave. [The Orb is DM]
  4. If you are killed, you awaken deeper within the Crypt. Death cannot release you.
  5. Only someone already in the Crypt can summon you.

@Oveass please would you read this, I would like your opinion. It's pretty rough, but I think it could be a cool game.

I like it.

The goal is to get out of the crypt?

You can play this completely on your own as well as with the others in the crypt?

I like this genre of horror movie, so I'll definitely become a prisoner in your crypt.

I like it and I would keep it text based. It's a labyrinth, it shouldn't be charted. (Perhaps the crypts pathways even change randomly)

Is the point of the first cycle to write miserable/scared stories?

@i-am-me your dungeon is ready.

Please read this, it is a pretty rough draught, and needs work. I think the idea could be fun though..

Done the map. I'm leaving it unlabeled. As people explore, they can name the areas, hopefully its drawn in a way that isnt too ambiguous.

I also edited the sidebar text. I think its okay, don't need it any more wordy than that.

One thing: YOU need to enabled "both" on anonymized mode. I can't do it, and we need it for the true darkness to actually be anonymous. Otherwise you can save comments and figure out who posted it.

here we go, the how to text:

In order to play you must be bound to crypt, this is only done by someone already trapped in the crypt. If you don't know anyone playing, check out this thread to ask to be invited [You sit as an adventurer, ready to delve into to the crypt of your own volition. Whether treasures, torture or glory await you make no mind. You perform dark ritual to communicate with the trapped. A dense smoke surrounds you, stinging your senses. You call out into the billowing emptiness: "Bind me, oh trapped souls!" Post in this thread to be on the waiting list.]

Background:

There are many ways into The Crypt, but only someone within The Crypt may summon you. Every player that awakens within The Crypt, will find a dark orb hanging around their neck. The Orb allows you to summon one new player to the game every cycle, and it cannot be removed. What other secrets it possesses, are up to you to discover.

There are three cycles to The Crypt:

  • True darkness is the most frustrating of the phases. What lurks in the darkness, what horrors does it hold? What powers it might unleash, is yet to be written. The darkness is no ones ally. It is easy to kill in the darkness, but can you find your prey. Can you tell friend from foe? *

  • Twilight is the second phase, everything is more substantial. Things that can be done in the dark, cannot be done in the Twilight. It's easier to see where you're going, and easier to find things. This is the best time for exploring and meeting with others, a time to rest from the carnage of the darkness.*

Phase information:

(Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) True darkness will employ a subverse script where player names cannot be read. It can be assumed that the tunnels and walls shift, allowing potentially the player to potentially wander into anyone or anything. If you make posts during this time, you should use the "anonymous posting" mode for your actions to be truly anonymous. (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) Twilight is the normal phase of gameplay. Walls may still shift and you are liable to be attacked by creatures that stalk the crypt alongside you. (Sunday) The Forge is the shortest phase and a peaceful one. The Orbs energy is a blessing and a curse, while it gives you more power it will glow hotter and hotter as the forges burn. In order for you relieve the burning power of the Orb, you must bind another hapless soul to the Crypt.

How to write a story:

You must use your imagination to write a story of yourself exploring the crypt. Read through a few stories to get a feel for it. Though these are not rules, the following tips will allow for the smoothest story telling experience. Around 200-750 words makes a story that is not too daunting for the community to read. Embed images that you find online to objects or places that you discover. This helps people imagine what you are saying. If you are referencing a previous story, event or location, link to the thread that discussed it. This will lower confusion and save everyone time. Take the game seriously but not too seriously. While having Mr.Poopybutthole wield french baguettes and kill 100 goblins might be an entertaining thought, it ruins immersion by being too silly. On the other hand, don't be too serious. If an object or location you created is misused, abused or destroyed by another player, don't get upset. Make your story realistic or justifiable. You should not be able to find exalibur and suit of adamantine armour in the very next room you step in, ideas are liable to be voted down by a community for being unrealistic.

Community:

The atmosphere and story are community driven. Controversial stories can be voted on as "aye" or "nay" from community members in the comments. Compliments or complaints are made by using meta text, which is 5 octothorpes followed by your text: #####meta text. Actual interaction to the story is done with plain text. The Orb is the final say in every situation, it will total the ayes and nays for each story and decide a resolution. Only the Orb can decide to let you leave. Pinging users is a key part of getting involvement in your story. Make sure to ping your party or anyone involved.

Death:

If you are killed, you awaken deeper within the Crypt. Death cannot release you.

Setting:

The Crypt is like any dungeon crawler ever. Magic, swords, goblins. That being said, you are free to make up anything. The Crypt always changes, the walls are alive and twist with magical power. It is assumed that the crypt will change to suit your storyline, so there is no need to keep track of location. That being said:

It is made up of charted and uncharted territories. The uncharted territories are not and cannot be charted, they can include anything. This comes with a price to pay which is that anything done in the uncharted territories is liable to be lost forever. The charted territories are in the "middle" of the crypt and will be updated regularily with new locations as they are discovered. They are rather ambiguous and the exact paths you take are up to your story. On a micro scale they are still liable to change. On the macro scale however they do not change. Anything dropped, crafted or killed in the charted territories will remain there.

It is up to you whether you enter the charted or uncharted territories, it can be assumed there are many passages between them as well. Make your choice according to your playstyle and personal preference for visual information. It may be easier to start your story in the charted territories if you want to interact with other players.

Its time to make a post:

Assuming you have been bound, its time to make a post! Decide where you wake up and give us all a back story on your character. Have fun! Hail the Orb!

Whoot. I'm pretty hyped for this. I haven't been on voat much cuzz the shilling for us election was a bit much at times and cuzz I go by car instead of train to work now (turning 4hrs of voating on the train into 3hrs of speeding past the traffic cams) but I'm confident I could dedicate 30min daily to this.

@fuzzywords please can you help

I'm using the following CSS for the background in this sub

/* Marble backgrounds */

body {background-size: cover;}

body.light {background-image: url(https://i.imgjar.co/jar/eFa9gg9CC0qjSkTN68jVWw.png);;)}

body.dark {background-image: url(https://i.imgjar.co/jar/eFa9gg9CC0qjSkTN68jVWw.png);;)}

.even, .comment .comment, .md, #header{

background: transparent;

}

.light .odd {background: rgba(50,50,50,50.15);}

.dark .odd {background: rgba(0,0,0,0.15);}

.light #container, .light #header-container, .light #sr-header-area {

background: rgba(0,0,0,0.65);

}

.dark #container, .dark #header-container, .dark #sr-header-area {

background: rgba(0,0,0,0.65);

}

However, after the second comment, the comments lose their opacity. Would you be able to help me?

Thanks :)

@Dumb_Comment_Bot

Hope you had a good weekend.

Just a short update. I fixed the light mode problem. I couldn't get the shading right, so light mode sucked. So I've enforced dark mode on the sub, and it works much better. I also did some Forge CSS. Not sure on any of the imagery, but I like the colour pallet. What do you think? I was also thinking of maybe doing a rolling header instead?

Any way, I'm off to bed? Have a good day :)

Hey, I did have a good day, it was a long weekend because of Family Day. I agree that light mode is retarded, I feel like it should be standard for voat and if you want light mode you have to go through a dialog that goes "are you sure you want to admit you are retarded?"

Colour pallet is good, and the imagery seems fine to me. the background image seemed a little bright. So I made a few tweaks to the css:

  1. I made the background transparency from 0.3 to 0.65, its a lot darker but I did it for legibility.

  2. I was trying to fix the fact that the nested comments are not transparent and found some thread legibility thing. It looks good on pc and like shit on mobile. Still didn't fix the comment thing. Is there any way to view the css of other subverses to blatantly copy it? Admittedly this is the first time I have done this sort of thing.

Rolling header might be nice to add a "lively" feel when the forge is lit? Perhaps you can make the sidebar image a gif of charcoal burning? https://media.giphy.com/media/NLXOk64CHU5bi/giphy-downsized-large.gif

The image I found of charcoal burning is kinda shitty. I'll look harder tomorrow I'm going to bed right now. I have tomorrow off and the only thing I have to do is make phone calls so I'll be on.

You should make a comic about this, I laughed :)

I like the gif for the side bar. Ye I need to fix the dialogue bar. I'll see if I can figure it out, if not I'll ask fuzzy or failure. You can rip CSS from any sub. I'll send it to you in minute, my memory is a little fuzzy first thing in the morning..

I did a rolling banner on v/k9supremacistsunite, I think we could do something really clever with it. just have to think of something clever now

Okay, I added the gif to the sidebar, but it was a bit too small. Tried a few others, also too small. The one I have in there now, is a little too fast..

So wasn't sure if you would get the messages on IRC. I tested out the new image for the twilight CSS in https://voat.co/v/drawrequest

Personally I think it provides an improvement in legibility. reuploaded https://i.imgtc.com/umIkGQl.jpg

Next I did some playtesting for the "anonmity" of the crypt in true darkness mode. you can still save the comment, check your saved and it will give you the username. Not only that buuuut obviously you will get a comment reply with that users name. We could work around this by using anonymous posting during this cycle. Not that you would need to farm the CCP or SCP from this anyway so anon posts are perfectly usable for us.

Now what are you thinking for the light mode?

I collected some images: http://img07.deviantart.net/cdb3/i/2011/325/3/6/durnir__s_forge_by_durnir-d4e6o5x.jpg

The light mode was going to be based around the forge.

The forge is a mystical entity within the crypt. When it begins powering up, you get twilight. When it's powered up, the crypt is filled with forge light. That was my idea for the light phases. I had just started to look for imagery when slimgur died, so it's an open search. I like what you found, it's kinda the feeling I was going for.

This is what I had

Another

and another

Anyway, that was my original idea for the forge theme. I think you are right about the dark bricks, they work better. I'm glad your on board with this, it's so much more fun now :)

Oh, one last thing, this was my image for the orb

Well I have a market day today so I'm not going to be available at all, but so far the subverse is looking good. I had some ideas really late at night as I was falling asleep but I forgot them. Which is pretty standard as remembering things goes. I'll let you know as I remember them.
