  1. Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA
  2. Visalia-Porterville-Hanford, CA
  3. Bakersfield, CA
  4. Fresno-Madera, CA
  5. Sacramento-Roseville, CA
  6. Houston-The Woodlands, TX
  7. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX-OK
  8. Modesto-Merced, CA
  9. Las Vegas-Henderson, NV-AZ
  10. Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ

Interesting thing to note:

  • LA is in the Los Angeles Basin
  • Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale area all in the Salt River Valley.
  • Las Vegas is in the Las Vegas Valley.

And the big one: Visalia, Porterville, Hanford, Bakersfield, Fresno, Madera, Sacramento, Roseville, Modesto, and Merced are all in the San Joaquin Valley.

In all these valleys, the westerly winds push the pollution to the mountains on the east (then south, in the San Joaquin Valley, which is why Visalia and Bakersfield are higher than Sacramento). This concentrates the pollution, making the air worse than it would otherwise be.

The interesting thing is Dallas and Houston. They're both in flat areas. No idea why they are so bad, considering their more advantageous locations.

came here to say this. The mountains and the winds have a lot to do with the pollution levels being high. Not that the Porter Ranch thing didn't help....

I'm from Houston. On the southeast side we have oil refineries that are not technically in Houston that but doesn't prevent pollution from spreading to the local area. Those refineries are constantly fined for polluting the air. We also have lots of sprawl which means lots of drivers. I can't answer for Dallas but Texas is huge and spread out so that's probably a similar situation.

Fascinating. Aside from the blatant political shit in the title, this is a very interesting topic. I wonder why CA has it so bad? Is it geography? There's not exactly a ton of industrial manufacturing and such out there anymore.

California alone grows half the nation's produce, and the San Joaquin Valley is where the farms are. Lots of dust from agriculture. Add tons of drivers from the longest freeway system in the country and you generate lots of bad stuff!

We just have too many people in California. But the air is much better than the 70s. It would hurt to breath and you could only see 100 yards before the brown haze blocked the view.

Admittedly a lot of that comes over from Beijing. Not defending California but lets be fair its not entirely their fault.

Dude, considering that China is manufacting pretty much everything 'designed in California' I'd say it might be partly our fault indeed.

Pollution in California came from China?

Air currents carry it over the pacific. Not all of it obviously but a large amount.

Not necessarily, air currents move it towards Cali and Canada however those currents (to the best of my knowledge) skirt by Hawaii to the north.

Oh wow. I am at number 24. I would have never thought we were that much of a polluted city.
