There might be some confusion here, we are talking about the oath one takes during the naturalization ceremony, not the other thing commonly known as pledge of allegiance (not sure about the correct terminology here)
edit: fixed the quickly-typed-on-a-mobile post - and replaced 'oath' by 'pledge' - correct name of the other text.
Ahh that makes sense. As a Britfag I was concerned it was some kind of oath all Americans had to swear. I can understand taking an oath to your new country. Thanks for the explanation.
