I almost always sleep in two parts. I'll go to sleep and sleep for about 4 or 5 hours and wake up. Then after several hours I'll take a nap for a couple of hours before I go to work. I always thought it was weird but maybe it's the way I'm supposed to sleep.

Yeah me too. I've been ill for the past couple months and had trouble sleeping. First I overslept a lot. Then I started waking up in the middle of the night, startled. I've heard people always say "if you have insomnia and can't go back to sleep in 5 minutes or less, get up and do something for 10-15 minutes, then go back to sleep when you are tired." Turns out, I'm up for hours now instead of just 10-15 minutes, before ever going back to sleep again. I feel pretty well rested.

I've been stuck in this two part sleep cycle for a few years now and I hate it. I wish I could go back to just sleeping 8 hours and be done.

This is a hypothesis, by no means a fact.

You're joking right? There's no debate on this issue.

if you look at most of the animals, especially small predators such as cats, we can conclude that they sleep when the opportunity arises. I believe that people behaved similarly before the stability that we have today. Now you have to give maximum at work (specified time frame) so OP statement make sense to me. unless you're a bear xD

Back when I was finishing off my degree, I had a split sleep pattern. As I had no lectures, and almost all the work was done at home, it just kinda happened.

I was up 6-18, asleep 18-22, awake 22-2, then up again at 6.

No idea how it happened, but it worked. Come to think of it, if I went to work earlier, I could probably make it work again...

Its long known scientifically that our current sleep schedule is far from optimal. It's just that changing it in our connected, corporate world is very difficult.

I had this issue for about a year. I wasn't a fan.
