That's hilarious. Dumb hacks like this can add up and cause problems sometimes. Respect to the person who thought this one up, though.

I would love to see the creation of this idea. "Sam, we've got to make a train for the new DLC. How can we do that within the game engine?" "What if... the train was a hat?" "..." "A really big, train-shaped hat with a person underneath running really fast! It'll work!" "Whatever Sam, you do that. I'm going back to making Liberty Prime quotes."

It seems like a silly way to do it, since they already have code for vertibirds. Couldn't they just make a reskinned vertibird that doesn't... verti?

The article mentions that the vertibirds were just pre-rendered animations that did not operate within the game's physics engine.

If only they'd made it an item and used it as part of fast travel. "Shit, I gotta be a GNR in 5 minutes" pulls out train hat 'choo-chooooo!!!'

Modders get on that shit!

There already are good drivable vehicle mods for New Vegas, and Skyrim. And a bunch of mobile fast travel point style vehicle mods for all Bethesda games.

And everyone thought that Team Fortress 2 was the tops when it came to hats. Valve, you got NOTHING on Bethesda.

Epitome of a kludge that worked and they said fuck it, ship it!

I saw a lot of that when working in QA.

Apparently stuff like this in games isn't all that uncommon as it's often easier to modify existing resources than it is to build things from scratch

Can you think of any other good examples? They're all on the tip of my tongue but can't think of any
[–] Thorium 0 points 6 points 6 points (+6|-0) ago
I'm stealing these examples because they were better than the ones I could think of:
In New Vegas, the narator isn't just a voice over but an actual character who hangs out in a room
In Skyrim, the statues are actually just NPC's that are frozen in place
In Arkham City, if you no-clip through the walls you can find multiple riddler NPC's hidden throught the map, similar to the New Vegas example
In World of Warcraft, all quest events happen via 'Bunny Triggers'

In a few games (e.g. Fallout 3 and Oblivion) in-game voice-overs need to come from a model, so an NPC is added out of the play area, perhaps beneath the ground or inside an unreachable building.

This couldn't have come at a better time. I just started playing Broken Steel for the first time a couple of days ago and haven't made it to the train part yet. Awesome, I can't wait to get there. And thank you hilarious heads up.
