It's unfortunate you just disregard the emotional impact. We're not just talking about little Timmy having his feelings hurt because everyone else went on to the next grade. Children that are held back have over twice the drop out rate of children who are given an "Emotional Pass" who performed the same. By in large failure in elementally school comes from outside factors, poor home life, no family support, it has nothing to do with actual intelligence. Holding a child back is more of a way for upset teachers to get back at children for not listening.

Literally the only thing it contributes to society is completely ruining educations before they can get started. Your just putting young people in a position latter in life where they can make perfect scores in every class and still graduate a whole year after their peers.

(For the record I'm talking about white children in white schools)
