That MIT comment is more than a bit misleading. The first semester graded pass / no record to give students a chance to acclimate. There's kind of a difference between being able to snooze through courses and ace everything a la high school - and then suddenly working hours each and every day just to get by a la MIT. Incidentally that means somebody who gets all A's his first semester, also does not have that represented on their transcript. The second semester also no records D/Fs, though A/B/Cs start being recorded.
