50/50. Before the invasion of Europe, it was actually on the rise. Schools that receive public money require 7 years of Gaelic (not going to turn this political, but I wonder if all kids are required to take it....). They even have the fáinne, which represents your level of speech and how willing you are to interact in Gaelic. The one on the far left is Expert and converses only/mostly in Gaelic while the one on the right is for nubs. The whole southwest region is called the Gaeltacht which means primarily Gaelic Speaking. When we were looking at houses in Ireland, some of the listings actually said you should be sure to know Irish, lol.
Edit: If you want to go really hard core, it isn't Gaelic, it's Gaeilge! Hehehe

The fáinne chart explains the Sein fáinne Irish political party, which I assume they took their name from the highest language fluency "medal" and has a primary, if not major, goal of having Irish Gaelic as a primary language.
If we had a medal system like this across the stream, you bet your arse I'd be more willing to learn Welsh!
I love the story of William Bonney. A man he respected was murdered in cold blood by and cop and a rich man. William witnessed the whole thing. Knowing there never be any legal justice, as the murder was the "law". So he took matters into his own hands and put Lawrence Murphy and his corrupt system to task. Billy the kid was the only "gunslinger" that didn't care about money (robbing banks and trains), he only cared about justice being served to those that rightfully deserved it.

Amazing how recent the Wild West is in the history of the U.S. Around the same time the Native Americans were still fighting the U.S. government to maintain their hold on their land.

The "natives" had just stolen it from other tribes a few years before that. They lived like wild animals, killing and enslaving each other.
