What the hell are you on? How would lying about his religion being intolerant to his actions towards gay marriage protect the religion? If it was faked then it would have been just for his personal benefit, what benefit does islam gain by being accused of being intolerant?

He's just asking mate. A link confirming is all you need to say.

It does seem like the article should of said which iman cursed him.

Taqiya (تقیة taqiyyah/taqīyah, literally "fear, caution") is a form of Islamic dissimulation or a legal dispensation whereby a believing individual can deny their faith or commit otherwise illegal or blasphemous acts while they are in fear or at risk of significant persecution.

I believe the new Mayor is lying to protect himself and Islam. He does not want to reveal his hand because he does not have enough of a Muslim base to tell everyone else to pound sand at this point.

Ok, but if he made up the fatwa story then that means he's painting islam in a negative light, showing that he isn't like other muslims. That is not defending his religon.

It's a fair criticism. The point of him doing such would be to pray upon the west's conception of moderate Islam and fundamentalist Islam, a way of reinforcing the no true Scotsman fallacy that moderate Muslims want to prop up. I'm not saying that is what he is doing, but it is not an impossible claim to make that he would do so. I don't really know much about the guy though, so I can't say any more than either way is possible.
