We found other media aggregator sites lacking in features and usability and knew we could improve.
Where are those improvements? Functionally this site does not even work better than stock reddit, much less reddit with the RES in use.
There will be features geared toward user customization and their experience that mirrors no other aggregator site.
Are those features geared toward stinking ants? Cause these features seem too small to notice. We can block subverses we don't like. That is all I can manage to find of any use. Right now all voat is, all that it does, is mirror reddit with a slightly fouler mouth and a slightly more conservative slant. It doesn't even do that well.
All cars have four wheels. Does that mean that every car is the same?
And yet voat is no better and no different from reddit... The site does not improve on what reddit does, it is a knockoff running with a different coat of paint. It even emulates the look of the site with its design. All cars do not look like the Ford Model T, new cars try to improve through variation and experimentation.
Where is the change?
What voat has done to gain support and growth, I really cannot say. I have been registered on this site for a while and have yet to see it do anything. It hasn't even really changed itself. What kind of fucking Alpha does not make radical and invasive changes to try to improve itself?
The site needs to have a shake up.
Like a shit sword made of decent iron, it needs to be remade.
Voat needs to do away with its retarded graduated user system that prevents people from doing shit until they have X karma. That's idiotic. It encourages people to make stupid, "me too," comments that contribute nothing. Replace that system with a different kind of user level system. Let us call them the five rings. For fun. Each ring allows for an additional vote on each item. Now, you say to yourself that this seems insane, people cannot up and down vote an item. They should.
Rock the voat
Votes. Votes are stupid. People vote with their hearts and not their heads. The userbase gets away with being morons because there is a binary voting option and no real consequence for voting like a moron. Just as digg did, just as reddit did - voat does. Why is voat being a reddit reskin? Sure is a lazy way to try to, "compete," with reddit.
So at ring 0, the user has 1 vote. At ring 2, 3 votes. Etcetera. Now, what are people's voting options. I say we learn from Slashdot, they have been using a system of more refined voting for a long time. They give context to people's upvotes.
|Off Topic (orange-red)
With this kind of cleaner and more explicit voting we can actually sort items in a better manner.
Want to see only recent informative articles? Easy.
Looking for the funniest dirty jokes? Piece of cake.
Give people the ability to browse by what is Hottest, Newest, and All Time by each of the 10 qualifiers, the hottest of the Puerile should sure be interesting.
This means that a ring 4 user can mark a submission as Funny, Engaging, Informative, Interesting, and Repost. It may be many good things, but it is still a Repost. And if someone does not want to see any Reposts an option to scrub things from their display would greatly improve browsing. I would always browse with, "Scrub Repost, Incorrect, Puerile."
Now, things would not instantly be counted as one category or another. No, a single troll voter would quickly ruin the site. Have it only count in a category if at least 15 percent of voters mark it in that category.
Privileges are lost, not earned
And then have an oversight system where people are given reduced voting capability when they keep on misusing their vote buttons.
That's right. We don't start at ring 0, we start at ring 4. You start as a trusted and valued user and gradually lose that respect.
Now, you will note I threw colours next to them, since we cannot have all up and down votes be the same colour. I tried throwing opposing colours against each other. Note that the only pairing I am absolutely in love with is blue for interesting and orange-red for off-topic. Sentimental reasons for that obviously.
How should these new votes be organized? A ten sided star. Put the score of the item in the middle and let people click on each of the corners of the fat star.
Spawn more overlords
I did say we need oversight. Slashdot actually gets points for this as well. There used to be a random selector for oversight over spent upvotes on Slashdot. You could disagree or agree with their vote and that would add weight to a metric which determined if a user was trusted or not with further votes. Take that system and use it.
Every day a user has a set of 5 items to look at without complete context. They cannot be for things that they themselves voted on. They don't see usernames or where the voting took place. They see the item, if it is a comment, they see a name-free branch of the comment tree and the submission so that they can see if the comment properly reflects it.
This means plenty of things will never have oversight, but it will be quick and painless. It will also give a metric to judge users. A sign of when people are abusing the vote system. If they are just using Incorrect all the time as a dump downvote, they will be caught on it quickly and will soon lose a level in their ring rating. And let a bored user do more than one page of these oversight checks if they want to, don't hold them back if they want to help out.
voat should also do away with these horrible subreddits, the idea is just stupid. Sorry, subverses. Just as stupid.
They create annoying echo chambers where idiots can reassure one another their stupidity isn't bad.
Use instead a tag system with which people can create their own front pages based on would better serve people, hell, keep calling them subverses if you are attached to the name. Let people create customized pages that they can share with one another. Functionally like a subverse, but the discussion is not segregated and the voat is not specific to the tag it is given. It is shared by all the subverses that share that one item, be it a self-post or a link. That way the girls looking for yogapants and the guys looking for girls in yogapants will be in the same boat, it will keep discussions more open and interesting. And most importantly prevent idiotic echo chambers.
All moderators should be randomly selected ring 4 users that just get the power for the day. And no shadowy powers, instead having a complete and open log of everything every moderator does with names and timestamps on them. If someone is being abusive, it is easily seen. Make it so any other moderator of the day can put a stop to another moderator, at the cost of the rest of their day's moderating.
So, if someone with moderator status for the day does decide to be a douche, someone can jump on the grenade. And if someone with moderator status wants to be a douche and stop someone else moderating, it puts and end to them being a douche too.
Then the admins just need to keep an occasional eye on moderator actions and don't need to meddle with the site's day to day operations.
Anyways, this is just a slightly more angry version of reddit. The angst is annoying. The least voat could do is try and be technically different from reddit.
But what do I know, if I could program such a site, it would already exist.
