Before Abrams showed it being built on the surface, it was canon that those ships can't withstand full gravity, and were built in space because of it.

That video clearly states that this was the first ship of its kind that could actually land on and lift off from the surface of a planet.

Actually, even in TOS, NCC-1701 was built at San Francisco. Not only that, but the Constitution class starships could enter the atmosphere of planets like earth (TOS: Tomorrow Is Yesterday).

Have a look at the link that /u/redditor1255 sent in another reply to this comment. If it is correct, the Intrepid class starships were the first to be able to land and lift off from a planet's surface.
