The probe only worked one time, it would be a shame to just let that story die. They taught him to play the flute and everything.

That does seem like a really poor design choice considering the magnitude of what it carried.

Enterprise brought it on board and took it apart anyway so it's not like it would have had a chance to do someone else too.
