Occam's razor applies. The most likely situation was just a normal failure, 2nd stages are working at the bleeding edge of material and structural sciences. Also the IDA was inert, it was no more reactive than the Dover made spacesuit in the capsule. As for the laser, who exactly would fire the laser? The Air Force who needs SpaceX rockets? Boeing doing it themselves behind the back of their shareholders?
