I found a book called Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer at some used bookstore in Germantown, TN (outside Memphis) - sorry, bookstore, I forget the name. You were about 1 mile south of Poplar Pike, and you had an excellent history section!
Anyways, this book details the various American accents as derivatives of 4 different English countryside accents, based on the locations that English settlers departed from - they tended to move to similar areas if they were similar areas in England.
