Technically and traditionally a Social Democracy is a political, social and economic movement that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic system of policies and a capitalist or free market-oriented economy. The protocols and norms used to accomplish this involve a commitment to representative and participatory democracy, measures for income redistribution, regulation of the economy in the general interest and social welfare provisions.
In short, a liberal, left-leaning policy structure that greatly favors individual rights over property rights. Unlike Socialism, where the government owns the means of production...in a Social Democracy the citizens own property and the means of production in a highly regulated, highly taxed generally open market. Success is measured by the amount of the citizenry the government can support rather than the amount they no longer have to. Many of the Nordic countries are versions of Social Democracies.
