Best of both worlds: airlines are free to overbook as much as they want. However regulate to require that if a passenger must be removed that the airline is required to continue to increase the sum offered for somebody to forfeit their seat until all seats have been voluntarily cleared.

Seems like a simple fraud situation: you're not supposed to sell things that don't exist.

Exactly. They sold every seat available. Then re-sold some of seats on the off chance people don't show up.

They should over-book seats only to hot sexy people, so that if they both show up for the same seat, they won't mind sitting in each other's lap..

I thought the United situation was due to four United employees that were being repositioned and not due to overbooking.

It is, but they are using the word overbooking to put some spin on the story, just like claiming the guy was belligerent and disruptive, or fell onto an arm rest.

Someone was inconvenienced! Quick, get the government involved before exploring other ways to fix the problem! The government will just create a 1,200 person department with $90k salaries plus pensions to fix the few problems that arise.

Now instead of coming up with a reasonable, cost effective solution for the one guy getting screwed occasionally on his $200-$400 flight, we all get to pay extra taxes instead for this new regulation department. Man I love government, what can we regulate next?!
