None.

First of all, a lot of the palm wines, etc. still exist -- even in their original locales. Muslim populations of Muslim countries often didn't crest 2/3. There are many, many types of Middle Eastern Christians. Until the past 150, there were more Christian sects in the east than the west. Muslim laws didn't apply to them. Or Jews. Or Zoroastrians.

Secondly, let's be generous and imagine that these places were converted around 900. These liquors were probably only preferable to dysentery water. European wine before about 1850 was pretty bad. Romans basically discuss straining the leaves and bugs out of wine -- and that's the stuff they bothered to import. The value was its sterility, not its taste. Name one pre-colonial liquor from India. They exist -- but no one wants it.

Egyptian and Assyrian beer has been mentioned. The first step of this beer was "collect stale bread". The second step was "soak in water and strain". This swill was probably at a taste parity with sahti.

People have also mentioned "fermented milk". It sours, but it doesn't ferment (despite GRR Martin's descriptions of Dothraki plastered on "fermented mares milk"). It's fine. It's called doh in Persia, but you've probably had lassi at Indian restaurants. Same stuff. Think salt and mint.

Here's the bigger question: Every pothead drones on about how alcohol causes fights and noise, but stoned people are chill, man. You might like to read up on Hasan i-Sabah and the Assassins, whose name came from hashish. It seems that getting people blazed -- not drunk -- was the standard precursor to "terrorist attacks".

Edit to add: If you imagine that Islam prevented intoxication, prepare an explanation why Europe never ended prostitution. Everyone drinks. It's just that the civilized world is finally doing better than prison wine.

I've had the thing you're talking about and it's not really alcoholic at all, it's more like yoghurt or something. That said, you're wrong here. There's a stuff called Airag which comes from mongolia and is made from fermented mares milk (which is presumably what GRRM was talking about). It's not very alcoholic, less ABV than beer, but it's definitely not something you'd let your kid drink either (unlike that mint-salt-milk thing). Not sure about it's popularity in the middle east, but it's difficult to imagine the mongols didn't bring it with them.

All that said, it's not actually from that region, so it may as well be moot relative to the OP.

I'd say it's moot because I was responding to a comment in this thread about "fermented camel milk".

I've never had it, so I can't claim much knowledge. I have no idea how its made.

On the other hand, I would let my kid drink it.

yeah you like total right and correct. but one thing. you implied that booze in Europe sucked before the 1800's. but fuck that, us Irish have been making the whiskey (therefor the best booze) scene at lest the 1500s. so the mid east might have tried to make good drink but they would fail to come close to us. how ever im only saying this as a reason to talk about fine Irish whiskey. PS i fucking love whiskey.

Dude. You are so wrong. You learned it from them. You couldn't even distill until you got reports of Arabs doing it.
