I'm not saying cops shouldn't have body cams. I'd like to see them with body cams, but they cost the department or local municipality money. Money they have to get from taxes (or civil asset forfeiture, but thats another issue). Camera phones are extremely prevalent in society. So much so that some encounters get filmed from multiple angles from multiple people at the same time. Hell, there are prepaid phones that cost $9.99 you can get at a gas station that are equipped with video cameras. And just as you say:
the same argument could be said about the body cams because the cop controls when they're on and when they're off. I don't see what the problem is with filming cops. If some cops get caught violating the rights of citizens and get in trouble for it then great.

well then we shouldn't allow for them to control when they're on and when they're off. i dont remember ever hearing that cops could control their body cams, but if that is true then that is a problem. and even if it does cost money to do that, are you saying that its not worth it? i mean, if you think cops need to be monitored all the time because there will be instances of cops bashing skulls on cement, wouldn't it be worth it to put some funding into body cams? wouldn't that be more appropriate than having some schlep getting the footage to upload to youtube so that sovereign citizens can jerk off to a cop getting flustered and tripping up because he hadn't mentally prepared to perform like some fucking circus clown on camera? i mean, fuck. these are normal people who have the world watching their every move because of some shit cops who have a short fuse. it can be solved in a less pretentious and snarky way

Its not that having body cams isn't worth it, its that the money needs to come from somewhere. That aside, cops can turn them on and off. Even if every cop has a body cam, citizens have the right to video the encounter on their own device for their own record.
