Maybe they should invest in some actual server racks instead of hotplates.

Seriously though, there are many classic forums that have far more users that never have this many problems. Wonder if it's due to all the custom scripts or if the host is ripping Voat off.

Those forums don't have to perform a sort on a large database frequently with shifting sort values (votes / time).

Clearly you don't understand how this stuff works. However, aside from a handful of sites (like this), voat is way up there. Millions of hits, per month. And like @fusir said, it takes a bit more logic to run voat than PhpBB.
