You mean actually real, and potentially something some people should be concerned about, but has been blown way out of proportion by the media to the point where people think the world is ending?

I think this is probably closest to what I had in mind. There was a pic posted recently, of CNN's projection of New York being underwater by 2015, or something like that, that really made me think.

It's an issue whose real nature is unknown to most (if not all) in the general public, and that fact is used for marketing and manipulation. Plus, with things like the pic I mentioned above, when the moment of truth comes, it's a big, disappointing fizzle. The fun part about climate change is that we get to laugh at that fizzly moment again and again, because it just keeps happening!
