Shit, man, I'm on the left and lefties think I'm far right. The nutty fringe has taken over.

Right? It's absolutely insane, and completely inhibits the sharing and consideration of new ideas. And these are the guys running the show, and want us to believe our govt isn't corrupt. What is really going on, I wonder?

Me too. The far left has gone utterly hysterical while the far right has gone full denial.

Those of us off the fringe are left with no allies.

I would say the right, the center, and a couple of liberals are all pretty aligned nowadays, and that's the majority of the population. Of course it's the loud obnoxious people from both of the extremes trying to push their particular narrative, but they end up making themselves look bad rather than getting people to agree with them a lot of the time.

I need to frame this and put it on my wall so I can point at it when my boyfriend's and my political arguments heat up.

I'm dealing with the same thing, and I'm not even a centrist.

Most people have a handful of positions they believe in strongly, a larger number they support pretty well, and a bunch of other stuff that they kind of support. Sometimes these position happen to fall along party lines; sometimes, some fall on one side and some fall on the other, and sometimes, they are issues that don't even matter to either political side.

I find that half the stuff I care about is mostly ignored by the main parties, and the other half is pretty well divided between them.

It produces an interesting side effect - I never have to defend political leaders when they do stupid shit, and I can support people on either side when they do something right. It's interesting because the end result is that you'll find yourself estranged from just about everybody - the differences loom much larger in their eyes than the agreements do.

Happily, the political system is not the center of he world. Politics is downstream of culture, and culture is what really matters. Sharing ideas and attitudes is a small contribution, but it probably leaves a bigger and more lasting impact than any vote you'll ever cast.

I'm liberal on social, economic and war issues (I mean I'm antiwar). I'm anti-abortion, pro-guns, anti-tax. If Trump had not turned the Republican Party completely around and reformed it, I'd be supporting neither party now, as I supported neither in 2012. Voted Buchanan in 2000, Kerry in 2004, Obama in 2008, no one in 2012, Trump in 2016.

I pick my political beliefs a la cart. It happens that immigration is the issue I feel the most for. If I am going to get lumped in with the alt right or the Ctrl Left I am going with the one with the guns.

I just want to be delete center.

I can never really align myself with either party. For what it is worth I have taken a few political left/right tests and I tend to end up pretty far left. Really I am just on the left on a lot of economic issues and right on most other things.

I'm left on a lot of the social issues, very far right when it comes to gun control and financial things. I suppose I could be considered a libertarian, under the right conditions.

Does the definition of that word change whenever you see something you don't like? Just wondering...because it's really overused on here and it's mostly not used properly.

Good to see you're passionate about something.
