He was a pretty good painter, but the main problem is that he wasn't good enough to be one of the best painters. And since he applied to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna which was considered one of the best, if not the best art schools at the time, it was doomed to failure. It'd be like if you tried to apply to Harvard with a 3.9 GPA. Sure you're one of the best, but Harvard is going to deny a ton of applications that are even better than yours, so you have no hope of getting in.
