As a human secures levels on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, EG:

You will find that the more of the items on that level you ignore, the more you are free to enjoy on the levels below. For example, if you believe all strangers are useless and a waste of time (and most of them are), you are free to enjoy your family more as you do not desire any ESTEEM as your full happiness is found in your LOVE and BELONGING.
Another example. Say there is a massive war and most people and infrastructure around you is gone. You will find no happiness in SELF ACTUALISATION if you do not fill your PHYSIOLOGICAL needs first. If you constantly make yourself feel bad because you have no time or way to practice learning a piano. This will give you no drive to work your hidden garden in the forest for food or practice using a bow and arrow to hunt.
