The DVR only contains the recorder itself (basic device with no DRM, which also acts as a front/back end) and the decoder (DRM that translates the encrypted signal to something that can be displayed). The DVR itself is not needed to do this, only a decoder which can be in the form of any device like a cable card or integrated into a DVR. Things like cable cards allow you to select other devices to act as front/back ends for displaying decoded video, including non-affiliated DVRs devices such as PCs.
Most cable companies will rent you an M-card for a fraction of the price of their shitty cable box/dvrs, allowing you to save money monthly on their overpriced bullshit "products"
