Sailboats have design restraints do to propulsion being provided by the wind. The hull for mono hulls for the most part are narrow, long and deep. After that is accomplished you have to make do with the rest of the vessel. Sometimes the choices are not the best. Windows still have to be strong enough not to overly weaken the hull in a seaway.

The windows are higher because sailboats require more freeboard than a motorboat because they lean. Also, monohull sailboats that are big enough to have a cabin, will sink if they fill with water. A motorboat can be made unsinkable, a sailboat requires a heavy keel that would make flotation impractical when flooded. So anything safe, has high windows and small doors blocking boards, and a righting moment that will flip the boat upright faster than the small windows and closed hatch can flood the boat.

Oh okay, that makes a lot of sense, thank you.

If you have the coin, try a modern 42' catamaran. Two basements and an awesome upper area.

Because they're made to sail rather then be some kind of faggy condominium.

Yeah, kind of. Our neighbor had this huge comfy boat; it sailed like crap, though. I liked to follow him out of the harbor and literally sail circles around him in the Cal 20 I had at the time, and Cal20s can't do much more than 5kts, lol!

Can you expand on this a little more? I don't understand the question.

The narrow windows near the ceiling remind me of being in a houses basement.

Then go topside. Many power boats use the same windows some don't like marinette style.
