"After handing a gong to costume designer Jenny Beavan, who went up to claim her award in less than dazzling attire, Fry quipped: ‘Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady."
I'm so tired of these whingers and their constant and deliberate misrepresentation of the intent of a text. The joke here has nothing to do with gender but an inconsistency between the award winner and the reason they were given the award. Language, especially when used for humour is all about intention and not the meaning of the words verbatim. There's a subtly to language and to communication that is slowly dying because idiots don't stop think about about about a text in all its possible meanings. It's sad to see what's becoming of the English language and of communication in general in the hands of these literalists.
