You'd like to think that if enough police died while violating someone's rights, they'd change their policies and behave lawfully.

While there may be a lot of Youtube vids showing police acting a bit overhanded when it comes to Open carry activists, the fact is that those are a minority.
In my region (PNW), there have been many more positive interactions that I know about, and virtually zero cases where the outcome was negative on the part of the police or citizens.
We even had a 911 call played on local news ( in Seattle), where there was some obvious confusion on the part of the reporters, as a "man with a gun" was spotted in a Grocery Store. 911 is heard asking if the man is doing anything dangerous or suspicious, and the caller keeps saying "he has a gun. He's just pushing his cart around, but he has a GUN!!!" 911 op asks, is he just shopping, is he threatening anyone?, Caller goes on about "Well I feel threatened! Please send the police! He has a GUN. Why won't you send the police!?!?!"
This goes on and on, with 911 op just keeps asking about is he doing anything dangerous, or acting threatening, to which the caller just keeps repeating "he has a gun".... 911 eventually tells her that he is legally open carrying, and there is no officer available unless he is doing something illegal. Caller just keeps getting more agitated, you can hear in the background conversation her telling other people, "DONT GO IN THERE! THERE IS A MAN WITH A GUN!!!", "I am calling the police!" "Stay away from ((Name of Store))."
For one, brief shining moment, our local news had the chance to educate on Open Carry, but instead just went with , "Police later contacted the woman and told her that 'no laws had been broken'.
