Hi @artofchoke et al,
Last night, three babies raccoons came chirping up to my back door (Body length without tail approximately 5"). My neighbor has been feeding a racoon for years and now I do, too. These babies were alone, though. They barely nibbled on bread (first thing to hand), then toddled off. A few hours later, I saw my friendly raccoon without babies.
In my experience, it's better to leave babies in the wild unless certain they are orphaned. Animal mothers are much better than us and what looks like abandonment often isn't. But I've never seen such small babies unsupervised and was wondering if this is normal. I'm going to call a wildlife place on Monday (why does this sort of thing always happen on the weekend?), but was looking for peace of mind now if it could be had. Thanks. :)
Edit: for anyone in a similar situation, this website is helpful.
Edit2: Within 36 hours, momma was spotted with all three babies.
